Full day CPD on strategies to support students in developing skills + attitudes needed for learning
Service Description
This course is aimed at teachers or schools keen to support students with the skills and attitudes necessary for success at GCSE and A level. Whilst we may find the delivery of our subjects relatively straightforward, students can underachieve for a range of reasons that don’t necessarily directly relate to the subject content. This course aims to help teachers and schools develop a common language to address some of these wider issues in learning and motivation. All course materials and handouts for use with students included Session Outlines A typical event would be divided into 4 sessions – either half day or full day. Session 1: A is for Attitude, B is for belief: What do students believe about themselves and how does this affect their work. Dweck’s Mindset theory, imposter syndrome, and the danger of comparing ourselves to others. Session 2: E is for effort: When the going gets tough, the importance of keeping going. Understanding the change curve, the research on effort. How routines affect effort, what Maslow teaches us. Session 3: L is for Learning: Looking at some of the key strategies that help students learn, eliminating distractions. Ebbinghaus, interleaving and active learning, Cornell notetaking, Coggles and mindmaps Session 4: S is for structure, T is for Time: Time management using Covey quadrants, daily and weekly planners, organising folders, how tomatoes improve concentration. Using these strategies with students Full day, half day or twilight options available (depending on location) where a half day or twilight covers some of the above by agreement. Online delivery, whilst not always be as effective, is an option if preferred or in the event of face to face delivery not being possible.
Cancellation Policy
Typical Fees Full Day Course up to 5 hours (in person delivery) £450 (remote-webinar) £350 Half Day Course up to 3 hours (in person delivery) £300 (remote-webinar) £200 Twilight* (90 mins) (in person delivery) £150 (remote-webinar) £120 * Twilight face to face sessions only available within approx one hour travel of North Staffordshire Expenses 1. Travel – invoice will add travel costs to the course fee – either second class rail fare or mileage charged at 45p per mile. 2. Accommodation – where venues are more than 2-3 hours away from North Staffordshire, overnight accommodation may be necessary before events. We will confirm this with you prior to finalising booking. Ts & Cs 1. Materials: All fees include materials which will be provided electronically before the event 2. Group size: The above fees apply to all group sizes up to 100 staff or students. However large groups may in some instances be less effective, so worth considering on booking. If groups are larger than 100, extra fees may apply 3. Cancellation: cancellation, particularly at short notice, may mean that other bookings have been declined in the meantime so a cancellation fee applies if organisers cancel the booking within 1 month of the event. Cancellation fees are ¼ of the total fees and any expenses incurred or £50, whichever is greater.
