The Parable of the Sower (schools edition)

A senior manager went out to sow a new initiative. It was a bright sunny morning on the day set aside for the development of the staff.

Much of the seed of the initiative fell on the path. For some teachers and middle leaders did ignore the initiative and did nothing about it. This was not challenged and many more watching staff did conclude that they had been mugs for putting in the extra work. They resolved that they would not be fooled again.

Some seed fell on stony ground, the seed started well and there was some compliance or enthusiasm. Yet in the fullness of time, or in fact a few short weeks, the seed begin to wither. There was no root and staff quietly returned to their default settings. Yet behold, many boxes had been ticked and great was the rejoicing in offices; yet change had not really occurred outside those office walls.

Some seed fell among thorns; for great was the number of different initiatives and policies that were within that place. Teachers and middle leaders were in great confusion for it was unclear what must be done and what could be left. Great was the feeling of being overwhelmed. Yet no one opened their mouth nor giveth their feedback as they knew that their leaders taketh it not well. And the leaders equally frustrated rebuked staff and called them incapable.

Some seed fell on good ground, the ground was good because it had been prepared. Ears and minds were open as the reason behind the initiative was explained. Time was given to prepare, and the staff were enthusiastic or at least compliant enough to give it a go. After a while, feedback was offered and it was received with gladness. The seed grew as it was regularly watered, and great fruit was eventually produced
